Gloeocapsa Magma

Common Bacteria found on roofs

Extreme Roof GrowthThis is a close up picture of a shingle that has been overcome by Gloeocapsa Magma. There are several bacteria that have invaded our area in a very big way, this picture is one of them.

Trinity Roof Cleaning is highly experienced and skilled in remediating this problem. Call us today 267-477-1107

  • When did Gloeocapsa Magma start attacking roofs and homes?

Well, theoretically cyanobacteria has been around for billions of years. These types of single celled organisms needed something to eat so they chose rocks because there wasn't any other form of life. Single celled organisms are very adaptable and can figure out tough ways to survive if they have to.

They enjoy Stucco, Roofing, Pavers, Stone, Wood and many other surfaces.

  • Why now?

In the Past 5 years or so the bacteria has really settled in our area. I remember when I first noticed this being a problem in Bucks County and the surrounding areas. It was in 2004 and I started noticing stains that were appearing at the lower gutters on two story roofs. This then turned into an accelerated problem and became so abundant that it is not uncommon for 2 year old shingles to have stains.

Just like any serious virus, your home must be inoculated. Trinity is the cure and prevention.

  • Why our area?

It is not because we have had the perfect temperatures the past year and it is not because we have had a very wet and rain record breaking year either. This does contribute to the advancement of growth but it has nothing to do with the fact that it is here and here to stay.

The reason our area is affected is the same reason that we are faced with allergies and the flu. The fact is we are not a desert climate and we have changing seasons. This change in temperature and seasons allows more leaves and plant life to die and grow again in the spring. When they die they leave behind the organic material that microbiological growth feed on, such as mold and bacteria. If you were listening to Mr. Peters in Sophmore year of highschool then you know all about detritus feeders.

Places in the south have been dealing with this for close to a century. "Basically you only need a food source and water for growth and shingles are a food source" Yes, your roof is a food source for bacteria, that means that your roof gets eaten alive.

This problem is here and here to stay.

  • What is Gloeocapsa Magma?

What looks like ‘stains' is actually a colony of living algae, mold and fungus growing on your roof. They thrive on the organic asphalt material from which your roof shingles are made. They root deep within the layers of shingle material and will grow until your entire roof is covered.

    GLOEOCAPSA MAGMA

    Gloeo what??

Gloeocapsa magma is a type of bacteria which has gained notoriety in the Southeastern U.S. and spreading  quickly throughout the Midwest and now the Northeast.. The reason is these particular algae are responsible for creating the unattractive black roof stains and/or streaks commonly noticed by many. The algae, unicellular, accumulate over time; this accumulation begins to show the problematic black stains as the algae develop their dark and hard UVprotective outer coating.
