What is that stuff growing on my roof?

It is most likely a bacteria called Gloeocapsa Magma. This is a form of microbiological growth that grows on most roofs and exterior surfaces that either get too much shade or have Northern Exposure;which is the least amount of exposure to the sun. You may not even know you have it yet. The first sign is usually a few black streaks at the gutter or even yellowish green dots all over the shingle that can only be seen from a closer distance like on a ladder or if you have a 1 story home.

Many industry professionals (especially those who have ulterior motives) have stated that chlorine products can damage shingles. Here is an article I wrote in response to that comment:

"This is just an uneducated guess, lie or something just to tell homeowners. It is completely false in all directions. I will explain only a few simple reasons of pleanty that prove this.

Asphault, plastic and vinyl come directly form crude oil. One of the most common plastics use in the WOLRD is pvc. PVC stands for Poly-vinyl-cholride. Obviously they go together like peas and carrots
Pools have liquid forms of chlorine or "bleach" in them or they will turn green and brown due to fungi and bacteria. Above ground pools are VINYL.
Throw a shingle in a pool and a shingle in a bucket of water mixed with any homeowner scam degreasing roof cleaner and call me in a month 267-477-1107. You will see which one is still there.
Freezing and thawing causes cracks, just like potholes in an asphalt road
Dry rot is a parasite.Period. Nothing causes dry rot but a parasite, bacteria or fungus. Anything else is false.
Have you ever seen the asphault sticky treads on a pool ladder? Proved wrong right there.

I will stop there, and not even mention a lick about the shingle manufacturers because they agree with me and every other professional that knows what they are talking about."

However; we do not use liquid CHLORINE to clean our roofs. We clean with special soaps and proprietary blends that are made specifically for each substrate. There are plenty of contractors out there roof cleaning with Clorox bleach and straight liquid Chlorine. We completely disagree because it is a rudimentary and unprofessional way to clean and it will not eliminate the bacteria. We eliminate the bacteria.

You can pull any power washer off the street and take a look at their trucks and you will find bleach on there. It is almost guaranteed. The fact is some forms of bleach can be great cleaners and very helpful when used responsibly .

We have a form of liquid Sodium Hypochlorite in our roof cleaning solution, but this is not what we use to clean the roofs, it is only an ingredient, or vehicle if you will, in our roof cleaning solution. There is no need for any more harsh chemicals. We believe in the best way for the environment and if we had our way there would be no Asphalt shingle roofs on the planet because the truth is they do much more harm than the hack contractors out there who clean roofs with Hydrochloric Acid or liquid Zinc solution.
